I taught art to at-risk youth in the South Dakota Department of Corrections for 10 years. Last March, my position was cut due to projected budget shortfalls. I have seen the healing power of art first hand working with at-risk youth. While the wounds these children suffer from are emotional in nature, the healing process remains the same.

Today I was helping out in a grade-school library when the art teacher came by. She told me that classes have been cut to 30 minutes. When my kids (27 and 29) were little, the outlets for their spirits were through writing, music, art and sports. The public schools in Philadelphia cut back to once a week for art and music. Being an artist, I have a tough time accepting the attitude that creativity is something that is somehow not important and is devalued in our culture.
